Abstract

ExxonMobil’s TTUD-1 position offshore Trinidad and Tobago is a US$42.5 million option on a frontier kitchen whose phase is unknown.ย

That first-phase commitment equals 0.26% of the government’s US$16.4โ€“21.7 billion development case.

The decision that would turn the option into a capital pivot, a drilling commitment, now falls in 2027, with spud guided for late 2027 or early 2028.

The deciding variable is not pace but phase.

Stabroek works because Cenomanianโ€“Turonian source rock sits in the oil window beneath Upper Cretaceous turbidite fans.

In the same deepwater province east of Trinidad, the only commercial-scale result to date is gas: the Calypso discoveries, about 3.5 Tcf, still without FID nearly five years after appraisal ended.

GLIAG’s pre-3D judgement puts the odds of a gas-dominant outcome, given any discovery, at roughly 60โ€“65%.

This Progress Paper updates the first GLIAG analysis, sets out a probabilistic decision tree to 2033, and places TTUD-1 inside the Caribbean Gas Arcโ„ข, where Venezuelan cross-border gas will arrive first and set the price TTUD-1 gas must beat.

2. What has changed since the first paper

The first GLIAG paper,ย Understanding ExxonMobil’s Pivot to NE Trinidad, argued that the move from the Canje Block to TTUD-1 reflected capital allocation, not geology:

Canje showed hydrocarbons without commercial viability, so Exxon redirected frontier effort to new acreage.

Three developments since then refine that thesis.

1. The capital is still small. US$42.5 million is option premium. A pivot in the balance-sheet sense arrives only with a well commitment, guided for 2027.

2. Risk is now shared. Occidental’s 10% farm-in in June 2026 came after acquisition began but before processed data existed. Carry terms are undisclosed; until they are, the farm-in signals a partner, not a prospect.

3. The schedule has slipped twice. In August 2025 drilling was expected about six months after survey completion; results were later guided for end-August 2026. Today both moved: processed images by end-2026, spud late 2027 or early 2028. ExxonMobil’s own exploration chief has said the company cannot promise the Trinidad system will behave like Guyana.

Amended GLIAG thesis:ย TTUD-1 is a capital-efficient option written by a company that learned at Canje how quickly frontier conviction decays.

The pivot is conditional, and its trigger is phase.

3. The petroleum-system test: phase, not pace

3.1 Why Stabroek is oil

The Golden Lane fairway works because three elements align: a Cenomanianโ€“Turonian marine source, the Canje Formation, a La Luna-family equivalent; burial into the oil window during the late Cretaceous to Paleogene; and Upper Cretaceous turbidite fans directly above, sealed by Paleogene shale. GLIAG set out that charge geometry in Golden Lane: Kitchen and Receiver of ACT Charge and the source-rock lineage in The Birth of Oil: La Luna’s Role in Petroleum Systems.

3.2 Why TTUD-1 may be gas

TTUD-1 lies roughly 190 miles off Trinidad’s east coast, northwest of Stabroek, beneath the distal reach of the Orinoco delta system.

The Upper Cretaceous source interval that charges Stabroek has a Trinidad equivalent in the Naparima Hill section.

Here it sits below a Neogene clastic wedge whose thickness at TTUD-1 is not constrained in public data.

The processed 3D will constrain it.

Two outcomes follow.

Where the wedge is thin, the Cretaceous kitchen may remain in the oil window and a Stabroek-type play survives.

Where it is thick, the same source is driven into the gas window or beyond, and the province behaves like Calypso.

The evidence to date points to the second: Calypso,ย about 220 km offshore in ~2,100 m of water, holds about 3.5 Tcf of gas across the Bongos, Bele, Boom, Hi-Hat and Tuk discoveries, withย all three appraisal wellsย completed by December 2021.

3.3 GLIAG probabilistic view (judgement, pre-3D)

Outcome, first exploration wellProbabilityBasis
Commercial discovery (any phase)15โ€“20%Frontier deepwater, untested play, one-well test
of which gas-dominant60โ€“65%Calypso analogue; burial under Orinoco wedge
of which oil-dominant15โ€“20%Stabroek analogue if Cretaceous kitchen is shallow
of which mixed / condensate20%Transitional burial
No commercial discovery80โ€“85%Charge, reservoir or seal failure

Read: P(oil-dominant commercial discovery on the first well) โ‰ˆ 2โ€“4%. P(gas-dominant) โ‰ˆ 9โ€“13%. These figures are GLIAG judgement and will be revised on the processed 3D.

4. Commercial architecture: three cases

CaseDevelopment routeBinding constraint
OilGuyana-design FPSO, standard hull and topsides; government case US$16.4โ€“21.7 bnDiscovery size; Liza went from discovery (May 2015) to first oil (Dec 2019) in 4.6 years
GasSubsea tie-back or host platform, export pipeline of 200+ km to the east-coast system and onward to Atlantic LNG at Point FortinGas price and fiscal terms; Calypso has no FID five years after appraisal
Dry / sub-commercialRelinquishment after phase 2Trinidad’s reserve life (<12 Tcf, ~10 years) shortens further

The gas case carries a precedent that every regional government should study. Woodside sought revised terms from early 2024, arguing that the Calypso PSCย had been designed for oil, not gas.

An initial agreement came in February 2025, and in August 2026 bpย agreed to buy Woodside’s 70%ย and take the project to 100%.

Gas found under oil-designed terms waits. That is the lesson GLIAG’sย National Pre-FID Gate doctrineย addresses: write the gas terms before the drill bit finds gas.

6. Regional fit: the Caribbean Gas Arcโ„ข

Trinidad’s gas problem is being solved from the west first. Venezuela formalised Shell’s role inย Loran, about 7 Tcf, in June 2026, alongside the ~4.2 Tcf Dragon field and bp’s interest in Loran and Cocuinaโ€“Manakin.

Both feed Trinidad’s liquefaction and petrochemical plants, where Atlantic LNG’s Train 1 has beenย idled for lack of feed gas.

GLIAG mapped that cross-border system inย Loranโ€“Manatee: Geopolitics and Gas Insights.

Supply sourceGas (Tcf)Earliest supplyStatus
Loran (VE) / Manatee (T&T)~7Late 2020sShell agreements June 2026
Dragon (VE)~4.2Late 2020sShell; US licensing
Calypso (T&T deepwater)~3.5Post-2030bp to 100%; no FID
TTUD-1 (T&T ultra-deep)UnknownAfter 2033 if gasPre-drill

Predictive insight:ย

Venezuelan cross-border gas arrives first, through shallow-water infrastructure, and sets the marginal price for Trinidad’s plants.

Calypso is second in line.

A TTUD-1 gas discovery would be third, at the highest transport cost.

For TTUD-1, the commercial bar is therefore an oil discovery or a gas resource large enough to justify new export capacity.

Exxon’s 90% position and Oxy’s 10% are priced on that asymmetry.

7. Implications for the Guyanaโ€“Suriname Basin

โ€ข Capital competition. TTUD-1 competes with GSB acreage for ExxonMobil’s frontier budget. Suriname’s licensing calendar should account for an Exxon well commitment decision in 2027.

โ€ข Gas terms before gas. Suriname’s own gas pathway, set out in GLIAG’s Production-Depletion & Fiscal Revenue Outlook, needs fiscal terms designed for gas now, not after a Calypso-type standoff.

โ€ข Kitchen depth as screening tool. The burial test applied here also screens Suriname’s outer-margin acreage; GLIAG’s generation and migration evaluation for Suriname provides the framework.

โ€ข National value. Whether TTUD-1 succeeds or fails, the regional question remains conversion of molecules into national value, the theme of From Exploration to National Value.

8. What would change the view

4. Processed 3D showing Upper Cretaceous fan geometry with amplitude support at drillable depth: raises oil-dominant probability.

5. A disclosed Occidental carry of phase-2 drilling cost: signals stronger prospect conviction.

6. A deepwater rig contract naming TTUD-1 before end-2027: confirms the pivot.

7. A bp FID on Calypso: proves deepwater gas can clear Trinidad’s price, improving the gas case for TTUD-1.

8. Further slip of processed data beyond Q2 2027: lowers the probability of a 2028 spud below 50%.
