Exploring Columbus’ First Voyage in 1492 with Modern Science

On 3 August 1492, Christopher Columbus sailed from the bar of Saltés with three ships. Thirty-six days after leaving La Gomera he reached Guanahani. In this video the Admiral tells his first voyage himself, in the first person and day by day, following his Diario. As he speaks, the map shows the winds and currents that carried him west.

Columbus, first voyage, 1492: the voice of Columbus. Winds and currents, from Palos to Samaná. 3 min 56 s. English subtitles.

What the video shows

  • The Diario track, corrected for current, leeway and magnetic variation, from Palos and La Gomera to the Bahamas, Cuba and Hispaniola.
  • Thirty simulated voyages, one for each year of winds from 1991 to 2020, showing how the north-east trades carry a 1492 fleet west.
  • The moments of the Diario: the branch of fire on 15 September, the false landfall on the 25th, the light on 11 October, Guanahani, Cuba, the loss of the Santa María at Christmas and the Gulf of Arrows.

Method. The video applies the GLIAG TRJ-01 method. No wind or current measurements exist for 1492, so modern climatology stands in: 10 m winds from the NCEP/NCAR reanalysis (1991-2020) and NOAA Global Drifter Program currents. It is a model and a best estimate, not a historical record.

The voice. The first-person narration is a dramatised reading after the Diario of the first voyage (Las Casas abstract; English translation by C. R. Markham, Hakluyt Society, 1893). It is not a verbatim quotation. The voice is AI-generated.
