Technical Context and Poetic Exploration

In the vast expanse of Suriname’s offshore domain, two maritime titans dance a delicate ballet of technological prowess and geological exploration.

The Stena DrillMAX and Zeemeeuw NC1033, accidentally together in Curacao, Boca Samí beach in Q1 2025, represent more than mere vessels; they are the vanguards of human ingenuity.

Stena DrillMAX, after 4 important upgrades, will be probing the mysterious depths of the Golden Lane in Block 58 and Block 64 (well Macaw-1), beginning 19th May 2025.

As of May 2025, TotalEnergies is set to commence offshore drilling operations in Suriname using the Stena DrillMAX drillship.

The primary focus is the Macaw-1 exploration well in Block 64, located approximately 280 kilometers offshore in water depths ranging from 1,000 to 3,000 meters.

TotalEnergies holds a 40% stake in this block and serves as the operator, with PETRONAS and QatarEnergy each holding 30% interests.

The drilling of Macaw-1 is scheduled to begin around May 19, 2025, following the drillship’s departure from Curaçao on May 13.

The operation is expected to last approximately 80 working days and will be fully supported from a shore base and the new Gummels airport at Zanderij, in Paramaribo, Suriname.

Technical Specifications

From Stena Drilling, 13th May 2025, on LinkedIn:

Stena DrillMAX has recently completed a series of upgrades as part of the preparatory workscope performed in Curacao for upcoming contracts, including the installation of:

  • Second trip tank
  • New fingerboards for 14” casing & 6 5/8” drillpipe
  • Additional brine flowline from shale shaker room to brine pits
  • Additional tank wash whizzy heads in the mud pits
  • Additional mud pit drains pipework

The modifications were initially proposed by our Operations Performance team to improve rig operations for our Clients.

Stena DrillMAX will now benefit from significantly reduced online cleaning time of the mud system. Availability of a second trip tank can save over an hour of emptying & filling time for each 100-stand round trip of drill pipe. The capability to rack back 14” casing in the setback is highly beneficial for various operators.

Stena Drilling continues to monitor operational performance and identify upgrades which can improve rig efficiency.

Emergency Escape Vessels on Stena DrillMAX: Safety Meets Engineering

The Stena DrillMAX, part of Stena Drilling’s premium ultra-deepwater fleet, is engineered for the harshest offshore environments, combining cutting-edge drilling capability with world-class safety systems.

While specific emergency equipment configurations may vary based on flag state and client requirements, here is what you can typically expect aboard a vessel of this caliber:

Primary Emergency Escape Systems

  1. Lifeboats:
The DrillMAX is equipped with totally enclosed motor-propelled survival craft (TEMPSCs)—each capable of carrying 50 or more crew members. These lifeboats are designed to withstand severe sea states and maintain life support for extended durations.
  2. Inflatable Life Rafts:
Typically, the vessel carries 6 to 12+ inflatable life rafts, each accommodating 15–25 people. These are often fitted with auto-deployment mechanisms to ensure rapid release in emergencies.
  3. Fast Rescue Boats (FRBs):
Usually 1 or 2 FRBs are stationed near the stern. These are not primary evacuation tools but play a critical role in man-overboard recovery and rapid-response emergencies.
  4. Marine Evacuation Systems (MES):
Some drillships utilize slide-raft evacuation systems for rapid, mass deployment—particularly in severe weather or platform abandonment scenarios.

Regulatory Standards and Safety Compliance

Stena DrillMAX adheres to strict international safety regulations, including:

  • SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea) standards
  • IMO protocols and flag state safety regulations
  • Mandated 200% evacuation capacity, ensuring every crew member has both a primary and backup escape route

Additional safety infrastructure includes a helicopter deck for medevac and emergency egress, as well as designated muster stations equipped with immersion suits and life jackets.

A Closer Look: The Two Yellow Vessels at the Stern, that personally caught my attention on the picture?

The two bright yellow boats mounted at the rear (stern) of the Stena DrillMAX are most likely Fast Rescue Boats (FRBs), although they could also be davit-launched lifeboats depending on design specifics.

1. Fast Rescue Boats (FRBs) – Likely Candidates

  • Primary Use: Deployed during man-overboard situations or immediate emergency responses—not for mass evacuation.
  • Design Features:
    • High-speed capability (typically 20+ knots)
    • Rigid or inflatable hull for stability
    • Positioned on davits or slide-launch systems near the stern
    • Operated by a trained emergency crew
  • Color: Their bright yellow (or orange) color enhances visibility in rough seas.

Personal Reflection: Lessons from the North Sea

Seeing those stern-mounted vessels instantly takes me back to my offshore survival trainings during a 15 year period, in Den Helder, The Netherlands, at the renowned Den Helder Training Center.

Before being cleared to work offshore, to be included in the official Offshore Passport, I participated in rigorous courses where we actively practiced evacuations from various lifeboats and FRBs—both in indoor training pools and out in the real harbor at Marsdiep.

I still vividly remember bracing winter winds, jumping into the cold water, and climbing into life rafts as waves crashed against us. It was demanding, thrilling, and deeply instructive—a true test of resilience and readiness, much like the challenges offshore crews prepare for every day.

Those training days not only deepened my respect for offshore safety systems like those aboard the Stena DrillMAX, but they also remain some of the most unforgettable experiences of my early career in exploration.

Question?

I have seen that an Offshore Survival Training Centre was opened in Paramaribo, by Kersten.

I do not know if it is ample and equipped enough for all the really necessary courses needed.

Neither do I know if an official Offshore Passport has been created by policymakers, and is presently required for offshore work.

In another essay on my website I have included relevant information on this subject, based on my experience in The Netherlands, where a rather strict protocol and requirements are standard.

For the important safety of personnel, just in case of emergencies.

This is essential, with all the coming offshore activities.

Poetic Narrative: Goliath and David of the Caribbean Depths

Upon the Caribbean sea so blue and green,
The Stena Max, a technological machine,
In Block 58, Gran Morgu and Block 64, Macaw-1, it descends,
Where geological poetry forever extends.

Precision-engineered, a maritime knight,
MPD systems calibrated just right,
The Drillmax pierces earth’s submerged veil,
Revealing petrochemical grails without fail.

Zeemeeuw, the nimble companion so near,
Supporting each mission with nautical cheer,
Where massive meets minute in oceanic dance,
A partnership forged beyond mere chance.

In switi Sranan*, the Golden Lane and hopefully also Block 64 unfolds,
Where TotalEnergies’ ambition takes hold,
Q2 2025 marks this exploratory quest,
Where science and poetry are jointly blessed.

A gentleman’s care, like a surgeon’s grace,
Navigates challenges in this offshore space,
For beyond what eyes can perceive or understand,
Lies potential beneath the maritime land.

Geological Muse: Reflections

Inspired by the rhythmic verses of Shakespeare and the lyrical insights of Yeats, this narrative transcends mere technical documentation. It celebrates the human spirit of exploration, the delicate dance between technological might and natural mystery.

In the grand theater of offshore exploration, the Stena Drillmax and Zeemeeuw NC1033 are more than vessels—they are poets writing verses in stone, ink, and oil, revealing the Earth’s most profound secrets.
