Golden Lane & Guyana’s Oil Odyssey:When Art Meets GeoScience

A Geological Prediction Captured in Time

Strolling down Geo Memory Lane, fast back to 2008-2010

When I was privileged to serve Staatsolie, Petroleum Contracts Department, precursor of Suriname Hydrocarbon Institute, I embarked on a journey that would bridge the worlds of science and art in the most extraordinary way. What you are seeing is far more than just a painting—it is a remarkable geological prediction captured in art, seven years before it became reality.

In 2008, I developed a compelling vision of the hydrocarbon potential in the offshore Guyana-Suriname Basin, specifically in the area I first denominated as the Guyana Suriname Golden Lane (GSGL). Drawing upon my geological expertise, I collaborated with my wife, translating complex geological concepts into a visual narrative that would prove remarkably prophetic.

At the time, the vast hydrocarbon potential of this basin was purely theoretical—a hypothesis waiting to be validated. My dearest aunt C* would often remind me of a Dutch saying, “Praatjes vullen geen gaatjes” (Talk doesn’t fill holes), cautioning me about the difference between speculation and concrete discovery.

Last 17th June 2025, she WhatsApped me jubilantly, a copy of her invitation letter:

“ Beste mnr./mvr. , Uw RVI pas is klaar om opgehaald te worden! Gelieve persoonlijk langs te lopen op Filiaal Flora op woensdag 18 en donderdag 19 juni 2025 om deze op te halen. Tijd: van 08.00u-12.00u. Uw geldig legitimatiebewijs is vereist. Met vriendelijke groet, Hakrinbank NV “.

She got her petroleum boom “ bonus ‘ of US$ 750, for all Sranan mangs…

Together, we meticulously captured the geological structures, stratigraphic traps, and petroleum system that I believed lay waiting beneath the ocean waves. This was no mere artistic exercise, but a scientifically grounded visualization of potential hydrocarbon resources.

Our belief was spectacularly validated seven years later, in May 2015 when ExxonMobil’s Liza-1 well struck oil, marking the beginning of Guyana’s transformation into a significant oil-producing nation. The well confirmed the geological predictions we had carefully mapped out in our artwork years earlier.

Followed by, first main discovery in offshore Suriname, 7th January 2020, Maka Central-1 well by Apache Corporation and Total S.A., proof that Golden Lane, and accompanying petroleum boom, extends from Guyana to Suriname.

Today, we are deeply humbled that this visionary artwork has been chosen as the cover image for the first comprehensive book about oil in Guyana, as recognized and solicited by Prof. Dr. Paloma Mohamed Martin, Deputy Vice Chancellor at the University of Guyana. This distinguished recognition elevates our work from a mere prediction to an official part of Guyana’s documented history.

The artwork serves as both a scientific visualization and a historical document, bridging the gap between geological prediction and economic reality. It was not just a lucky guess, but the result of careful geological analysis and a profound understanding of the basin’s characteristics, translated into a visual medium that makes complex scientific concepts accessible.

Journey of Recognition

  • The original painting was officially exhibited during my wife’s art exposition, “A Tribute to Suriname,” in April 2010 at the Consulate of Venezuela in Paramaribo
  • It was showcased at the Nola Hatterman Art Academy, where she painted under the guidance of Wilgo Vijfhoven and Rinaldo Klas, both renowned Surinamese painters
  • The artwork hung in my office while serving as an exploration consultant for Staatsolie, initially overlooked but now highly celebrated

This piece represents the intersection of geology and art, capturing a pivotal moment in Guyana’s and Suriname’s economic history before it even occurred. It now stands as a testament to the power of scientific vision and artistic interpretation.

What began as a visualization of an ever-dreaming exploration geologist has now transformed into a documented prediction—uncovered first in the giant Liza-1 field and now immortalized on the cover of “Guyana’s Oil Odyssey.” It is a magnificent, resilient, and circular journey of geo-art and geo-vision exploration.

Dedicated to the dear and precious country of my grandparents, parents, extended family, and friends.

For alla Srananmang’s, where ever, tan bun, odi odi, soso libi.
Carefully craft and enjoy your sky rocking golden future…

Contemporary Validation

Anno July 7th, 2025, citing from OilNow: Staatsolie explained the Golden Lane as “an area with similar subsurface characteristics, also known as a ‘play’, which in geology indicates regions where geological conditions are conducive to the formation, migration, and accumulation of oil and gas”.

Historical Correspondence

November 3, 2019 – Prof. Dr. Paloma Mohamed Martin wrote:

“Dear Mr. Chin: I am a Deputy Vice Chancellor at The University of Guyana. We are publishing a photographic History of Oil Exploration in Guyana. I came across your wonderful site and saw the spectacular Geo art of your wife and yourself. I am contacting you to request permission to publish the two pieces in our book…”

Follow-up correspondence:

“It is wonderful to hear from you and to receive your permission to publish your photos… I was intrigued by your interest in Guyana and now I know why. Thank you for the work and voice you continue to lend… Maybe we can invite you to come to Guyana in the near future to give a talk at the University…”

A testament to the power of scientific vision meeting artistic expression,
forever capturing the moment when prediction became reality.
