The Guyana–Suriname Basin (GSB) represents one of the most prolific deepwater petroleum systems globally.
Central to its success is the Golden Lane, a laterally continuous turbidite fairway extending from Guyana into Suriname.
This article reframes the Golden Lane as a predictive system driven by stratigraphy, sediment routing, and petroleum charge alignment.
The May 20, 2015 Liza discovery validated a geological system, the Golden Lane of the Guyana Suriname Basin, that I had most surprisingly already conceptually identified and coined in 2008.
Hydrocarbon accumulations follow a distinct corridor:
Hydrocarbons in the GSB are organized, not random.
| Element | Description |
|---|---|
| Source | Cenomanian–Turonian (OAE2) |
| Reservoir | Santonian–Maastrichtian turbidites |
| Migration | Vertical + lateral focused charge |
| Trap | Stratigraphic pinch-out |
Stabroek → Block 58 → Block 52
| Area | Fluid Type | Characteristics |
|---|---|---|
| Stabroek | Oil | High efficiency system |
| Block 58 | Oil | Stacked reservoirs |
| Block 52 | Gas/Condensate | Higher maturity |
| Field | Block | Year | Type |
|---|---|---|---|
| Liza | Stabroek | 2015 | Oil |
| Payara | Stabroek | 2017 | Oil |
| Sapakara | Block 58 | 2020 | Oil |
| Krabdagu | Block 58 | 2022 | Oil |
| Roystonea | Block 52 | 2023 | Gas |
The Golden Lane is driven mainly by canyon-fed turbidite systems, notably via the Berbice Canyon, forming laterally continuous reservoirs.
While the term “Golden Lane” gained prominence after 2015, the concept of a continuous deepwater fairway aligned with optimal petroleum system conditions had been identified earlier through basin-scale interpretation by myself.
As early as 2008, I articulated and visualized this concept, including an oil painting depicting turbidite systems flowing into the basin via canyon pathways.
This art work, painted by my dearest wife on my request, was displayed in my office at Staatsolie.
And later presented publicly in March 2010, during an art exhibition in the Consulate of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.
This painting was later solicited by Guyana, and is now so privileged to serve as the front page of their first book on their petroleum oil journey and discoveries : “Guyana’s Oil Odyssey 1750 – 2019: A Concise Illustrated History of Oil Exploration in Guyana.”
Such early representations reflect the role of integrated geological thinking in recognizing basin-scale systems prior to drilling confirmation.
The best discoveries are made twice—first in the mind in 2008, then in the subsurface in 2014.
The Golden Lane remains both a proven fairway and a predictive exploration framework for the future of the basin.
