Organic geochemical fingerprints of Golden Laneโข crude: what the public record holds, what it withholds, and how to close the gap

Converting bare headlines into deep strategic, added value
1. A deceptively simple question
Every crude oil carries the signature of its birth: the organisms that built its kerogen, the chemistry of the water that preserved it, the heat that cooked it and the road it travelled to the trap.
Organic geochemists read that signature in steranes and hopanes, in carbon isotopes and in the balance of vanadium and nickel.
The terms of reference for this essay were direct.
Assemble every available fingerprint for the oils of Liza and the wider Stabroek Block, for Surinameโs Blocks 52 and 58 and for any other GuyanaโSuriname Basin sample, and follow the barrels into the refinery record wherever Golden Laneโข crude is processed: Rotterdam, the Mediterranean, the United States and Asia.
The finding fits in one sentence.ย
The public record holds excellent commercial assays for the four Stabroek export grades, but not a single published biomarker or isotope fingerprint for any deepwater Guyana or Suriname oil; the only published molecular data in the basin belong to the biodegraded onshore oils of Tambaredjo.
2. What the assays already reveal
ExxonMobilโs technology arm publishes an assay for each export grade.
They are written for refiners rather than explorers, yet read with a geologistโs eye they already carry a first-order fingerprint.

Three patterns stand out.
First, the vanadium-to-nickel ratio declines steadily from Liza through Unity Gold and Payara Gold to Golden Arrowhead, and every grade carries low absolute metal concentrations.
Oils from strongly anoxic, sulphur-rich carbonateโmarl sources such as the La Luna of the Maracaibo Basin are vanadium-dominated at far higher concentrations; the Stabroek grades are not.
Second, nitrogen is high, between roughly 1,400 and 2,000 ppm, while sulphur stays low. That pairing points towards a clay-rich siliciclastic marine Type II kerogen rather than a sulphur-rich Type II-S, which is consistent with the Organofacies B mudstones recently described for the AptianโAlbian and Upper AlbianโCenomanianโTuronian source acmes along the margin.
Third, Payara Gold stands apart: heavier, nickel-dominated down to its vacuum residue, and with a total acid number almost three times that of its neighbours. Whether this reflects mild biodegradation, a lower-maturity charge, a distinct source acme or reservoir-level fractionation is exactly the question bulk data cannot answer. V/Ni and TAN respond to maturity, migration and alteration as well as to source facies. They are signposts, not proof.
3. Suriname: fluids known, molecules unknown
Block 58. APAโs flow tests give the best public fluid data offshore Suriname. Sapakara South-1 produced 34ยฐ API oil at a gasโoil ratio of about 1,100 scf/bbl. At Krabdagu the Upper Campanian tested 35ยฐ API at 2,000โ2,300 scf/bbl and the Lower Campanian 37ยฐ API at 2,500โ2,800 scf/bbl, while Maka Central-1 found light oil and condensate of 40โ60ยฐ API. Sulphur is reported below 1%. Rising gravity and GOR between these intervals hints at a maturity gradient worth testing. No export assay will exist until GranMorgu first oil, scheduled for 2028.
Block 52. Petronas has disclosed the Sloanea-1 Campanian discovery (2020), now framed as a gas development candidate; Roystonea-1 (2023), an oil discovery the operator describes as carrying minimal contaminants; and Fusaea-1 (2024), with both oil- and gas-bearing Campanian sands. No fluid properties have been released.
Tambaredjo. The basinโs single published molecular calibration comes from Schwarzer and Krabbe (2009). The onshore oils are moderately biodegraded (15โ17ยฐ API) and evaporated, with n-alkanes and isoprenoids removed but steranes and triterpanes intact. C29 sterane 20S epimerisation has reached its equilibrium value near 0.6 and the ฮฒฮฒ isomers sit at 0.55โ0.6, implying expulsion at about 0.8โ0.9% vitrinite reflectance equivalent. Biomarker and isotope work tied these oils to Upper AlbianโCenomanian source rocks sampled in offshore well NCO-1, more than 100 km away. Tambaredjo is therefore the natural anchor against which every deepwater oil should be correlated.
4. Following the barrels to the refinery
The export map is well documented. Europe took about two-thirds of Guyanaโs crude in 2024. Of the Europe-bound volume in 2023, nearly half went to the Dutch refinery cluster around Rotterdam and about one-fifth to Italy, although Rotterdam arrivals are often re-routed onwards. In the United States, Chevron accounted for roughly 83% of arrivals, most of them into El Segundo. In Asia, HPCL-Mittal and Indian Oilโs Paradip refinery took early Liza cargoes in 2021; Indian Oil later bought Golden Arrowhead and HPCL bought Liza and Unity Gold for delivery around the turn of 2026, while Chinese buyers have lifted cargoes regularly since late 2025. No refinery-level disclosure was found for Spain or France.
The refinery trail, however, will not yield molecular fingerprints. Refiners value a crude on yields, sulphur, metals, acidity and contaminants; steranes and hopanes have no bearing on a cracking margin, and crude-quality records remain commercially confidential. The refinery is therefore a sampling route, not a data source.
5. Closing the intelligence gap
Three practical routes can deliver authenticated samples:
โ Sovereign cargo samples. The Government of Guyana lifts its own entitlement cargoes and the Guyana National Bureau of Standards verifies cargo quality, which puts a retained litre of each grade within sovereign reach.
โ Staatsolie. As partner in GranMorgu and Block 52 and custodian of Tambaredjo data, the national company is best placed to release drill-stem-test fluids for scientific correlation.
โ Refiners and traders. Buyers in Rotterdam, Italy, El Segundo and Paradip can exchange samples under non-disclosure terms.
The analytical programme should combine whole-oil gas chromatography, GC-MS of saturate and aromatic fractions (m/z 191, 217, 218, 231 and 253), stable carbon isotopes of both fractions, diamondoids for the high-GOR Krabdagu and Maka Central fluids, porphyrin speciation to test the V/Ni gradient, and GCรGC-TOFMS for high-resolution family discrimination.
6. Why it matters
One internally consistent molecular dataset spanning Liza, Unity Gold, Payara Gold, Golden Arrowhead, Sapakara, Krabdagu, Roystonea and Tambaredjo would settle whether the Golden Laneโข is a single petroleum system or several. It would map maturity and charge risk along the fairway, sharpen exploration in the open blocks, and give Surinameโs new refinery an objective basis for crude-slate selection. The assays have opened the door. The molecules are waiting on the other side.
